AFTER-SCHOOL
YOUTH STRING PROGRAM
The new season of the Flagler Youth Orchestra begins Wednesday, August 23 at 5:00 pm at Buddy Taylor Middle School for new students. All interested parents and students are welcome to attend this orientation session to sign up and learn about the program, which is offered free of charge by the Flagler County School District .
Students may elect to play violin, viola, cello, or doublebass. Beginner, intermediate and advanced musicians are all welcome. Information on instrument rentals from area music stores is available upon request.
The goal of the program is to provide collegial string instruction and performance opportunities to any child with a desire to play — and enrich our community through the arts. Besides providing students with string instruction in a player-friendly setting, one of the many goals of this unique program is to provide children with a creative environment in which to develop artistically. Regardless of the student’s musical level, he or she will participate in concerts organized throughout the year.
Our music director and conductor is Jonathan May, who has worked with young musicians for the past 26 years and has developed orchestras throughout the United States including Minnesota, Colorado, Tennessee, and Florida. Besides his commitment to develop Flagler County ’s youth orchestral program, he heads string programs at Trinity Preparatory School in Orlando, Park-Maitland Elementary School and Daytona Beach Community College. He is also the Music Director of the Central Florida Youth Orchestra in Lake County and the Daytona Beach Youth Orchestra in Daytona Beach and the Florida Young Artists Orchestra in Orlando . Assisting Mr. May, the strings program boasts two additional string teachers with more than 50 years of combined.
Join the fastest growing, most exciting music program in Florida.
Classes are held at BuddyTaylorMiddle School on Mondays and Wednesdays between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. in one hour sessions. Class start times are based on grade level and experience.
